Rack Card
Many businesses keep a set of business cards at the front desk. Business cards are great for offering your contact information, but they don't have room for much more than that.
Rack cards are similar to business cards in that they're printed on thick paper stock and allow your customers to take home information about your business. However, they have much more room for text and graphics, giving you the chance to promote your products, dishes, services, promotions or upcoming events. With a bright, full-color design, you'll grab your customers' attention and let them know what's going on at your store.
What Can You Do with Printed Rack Cards?
Rack cards offer a convenient way to impart valuable information to your visitors. Here's what you can do with your full-color rack cards:
Print your menu so customers can call ahead and order takeout
Advertise upcoming events
Share news about sales, promotions and coupons
List your products and services
Give visitors a tour introduction
Educate visitors about a certain topic
Share photos of your products or facility
Introduce yourself and your co-workers or employees
Announce your business's recent arrival in the community
Talk about charities that you support
Promote resources where visitors can learn more about a topic
Provide a souvenir for tours or events
Write a short how-to guide
Advertise warranties and insurance programs
Offer a schedule for your event
You can do just about anything with printed rack cards. Since they're free, customers will be more likely to take them home and learn more about your business. Even people who wouldn't normally buy your products or services might take a rack card just because of the convenience.
How Do You Design a Great Rack Card?
Full-color rack cards have enough room for text and images, but they're more concise than brochures. Most people take menu cards because they want to get the information that they need in seconds. For this reason, avoid large blocks of text that take up most of the card. Instead, break up the content into segments that impart information without overwhelming the reader.
To grab your customers' attention, start with a short title at the top of the card. If you're going with front-and-back cards, you could have the title and introduction on the front and more information on the back. However, you could also include information on both sides if you have a lot to promote. Either way, give your customers a hook that grabs their attention and lets them know what's going on. When they see the cards on your desk or table, the title is the first thing that they'll read.
Images make the card more appealing, although you could get away with a text-only card with the right use of fonts and segmented content blocks. Some businesses use a photograph as the background of the card. If you choose this route, make sure the text is clear and easy to read over the image. Otherwise, use photographs and illustrations to break up the text without clashing with the text colors. Place the images in a balanced, orderly fashion instead of scattering them across the card like clip art.
Some designers prefer to add a simple border to their cards. A border can give the card an extra dimension, like framing a photograph instead of hanging the print directly on the wall. You could also place the border underneath certain elements to create a layered effect.
